Google Launches Instant Search Feature

Google has just launched a new feature for the most widely used search engine online, the feature is called ‘Instant‘, or ‘Google Instant‘, the idea behind it is pretty simple and straight-forward to understand, While you are typing you will see results on-the-fly.

This new feature was implemented to help save time searching, according to Google’s Research most users take a while to type out their keywords and by using this new instant feature you are most likely to save a few seconds but as Google say’s 2-5 seconds may seem like a low number but if you calculate the daily searches the Giant Search Engine receives and then add up the 2-5 seconds it saved from those searches the results would equal to hours being saved.

Google estimate’s they will save users 11 hours with each passing second!

Here are a few of the core features in Google Instant:

  • Dynamic Results – Google dynamically displays relevant search results as you type so you can quickly interact and click through to the web content you need.
  • Predictions – One of the key technologies in Google Instant is that we predict the rest of your query (in light gray text) before you finish typing. See what you need? Stop typing, look down and find what you’re looking for.
  • Scroll to search – Scroll through predictions and see results instantly for each as you arrow down.

See the below to get some more in-depth information about the Google Instant.

In the below snapshot, I was seeing the results as i typed and it felt like as if i were searching on my Windows 7 Desktop, Live & Instant Search Results 🙂

According to Google this feature hasn’t been integrated with world-wide domains that Google maintains for example www.google.co.in or www.google.com.pk. Google says that they will be adding the instant feature over the course of the upcoming months – No accurate dates are available. So far the functionality seems to be working well with the .com domain of Google (www.google.com). Google also said this feature is already available in most other domains but the user will have to be logged into their Google accounts to take advantage of this feature.

Google has a small notice on their Official Instant Search Page, saying that Google Instant is rolling over several days to users signed in to a Google Account. Check back soon if you are signed in and do not see it yet.

Read what Google has to say about this Instant technology.

Google Instant is a new search enhancement that shows results as you type. We are pushing the limits of our technology and infrastructure to help you get better search results, faster. Our key technical insight was that people type slowly, but read quickly, typically taking 300 milliseconds between keystrokes, but only 30 milliseconds (a tenth of the time!) to glance at another part of the page. This means that you can scan a results page while you type.

The most obvious change is that you get to the right content much faster than before because you don’t have to finish typing your full search term, or even press “search.” Another shift is that seeing results as you type helps you formulate a better search term by providing instant feedback. You can now adapt your search on the fly until the results match exactly what you want. In time, we may wonder how search ever worked in any other way.

Benefits

Faster Searches: By predicting your search and showing results before you finish typing, Google Instant can save 2-5 seconds per search.

Smarter Predictions: Even when you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for, predictions help guide your search. The top prediction is shown in Grey text directly in the search box, so you can stop typing as soon as you see what you need.

Instant Results: Start typing and results appear right before your eyes. Until now, you had to type a full search term, hit return, and hope for the right results. Now results appear instantly as you type, helping you see where you’re headed, every step of the way.

  1. There’s some buzz going around now that this will have a big impact on SEO, probably a negative impact.

Can’t say for sure if the rumors are..

  2. It’s obvious, this feature will promote brands that are already on the top and bury those who are hanging in there.

“Google clearly said that ranking stays the same with Google Instant, but it will change the way people search. It will affect their search behavior, and that is what search marketers are going to have to think about more than ever. You should also consider that some people will simply deactivate the feature, leaving them open to Google’s standard results.”

    1. @Einna:, You are right to say that its annoying i have been getting very annoyed with it since the past few days, i just turned it off like 4 hours ago and i don’t hope to turn it back on – atleast not anytime soon.

Google Instant is thinking for us much more than it should, I for one am not pleased with that.

  3. While I appreciate Google’s innovations that bring us cool products, I don’t like this new feature – at all. But on the upside, if your enter button is broken, you don’t need to worry about it, Google doesn’t =/
